rescuers must improvise a response from what is in their backpack,

A
wilderness first aid course is a comprehensive lesson in how to react,

WARNING!
VELOCIRAPTOR AHEAD |

|
Velociraptor
Attack Prevention
Are you prepared?
April 18th is Velociraptor Awareness Day
BSA
National Daycamp Standards (item M19) require Daycamp
Directors to prepare written plans for handling any emergencies that
might arise at camp. Since the theme for this year's Buckeye
District Daycamp is Dinosaurs, we assume the camp
staff's emergency planning includes contingencies for
accidents involving dinosaurs. It is the position of
Worthington Scouts that scouts attending this summer's daycamp should
be aware of basic strategies to avoid being injured or eaten.
According to The American Society
for Velociraptor Attack Prevention, velociraptor attack is the 3rd
leading cause of death for men age 27-29. The
velociraptor is a bipedal carnivore with a long, stiffened tail and can
be distinguished from other dromaeosaurids by its long and low skull,
with an upturned snout. It has a relatively large, sickle-shaped claw,
typical of dromaeosaurid and troodontid dinosaurs.
Velociraptors are commonly found on tropical islands, converted to
millionaire amusement parks, but have also been sighted in the Pacific
Northwest. Velociraptors have not yet been seen in Ohio, but
these are far ranging and elusive animals so it is possible they may be
encountered at daycamp.
Practical tips for surviving
a Velociraptor attack from Daniel Snyder PhD, Knox College
It
is widely known in the field of agronomy (e.g., Avery, 2002) that birds
are repulsed by methyl anthranilate, a natural compound found in many
of the less sweet fruit varieties. Methyl anthranilate has been used
(with some success) as a bird repellent on crops. Now, we know (e.g.,
Gauthier et al., 1988) that modern birds are descended from dinosaurian
ancestors, of which one close relative was Velociraptor (ibid.). Much
as lab rats respond to drugs like humans, it is entirely possible that
Velociraptor will respond to methyl anthranilate as does the common
crow or European starling.
Thus, I recommend you carry around a loaded SuperSoaker filled with
Concord grape juice. Fresh-squeezed would be ideal, but from
concentrate should be effective as well. This will not only have the
theoretical asset of protecting you from Velociraptor, it will have the
pragmatic asset of protecting you from thirst

Jamboree
On The Trail
Saturday,
May 9, 2009
Scouts Walking
Together
World Wide
Jamboree
On The Trail is an annual day for the World Scout Movement to hike
together. All Scouts, whatever their age and wherever they may be in
the world, are invited to participate in whatever way they can. Cubs
and younger Scouting sections could visit a local nature trail as part
of a weekend camp. A Scout Troop might check out a hiking trail while
working on badge requirements. A Rover Crew might make a Service
Project out of restoring or maintaining a hiking trail. In their own
way, everyone will be hiking the same direction: towards a better
future through Scouting. JOTT is held on the second Saturday of May
each year.
If you would like to particpate in JOTT, you can actually register your
activity and receive patches for your den, pack, patrol, crew or troop.
See the JOTT
website for additional information and details.
Registrations must be received by March 31 to receive patches
by May 9.

Current Buckeye District Boundaries |
COUNCIL BOUNDARIES
COMMITTEE REPORT
As
part of the Council Executive Board’s 2008 Key Initiatives, a
committee was formed to analyze the current council and district
boundaries to ensure that the council and it’s districts were
serving the youth of their areas as optimally as possible. The
committee included the following steps:
- Analyze the current
districts: We determined what constitutes a district
including geography (drive time and access issues), membership and
district health including committee size and activity participation.
- Meetings with District Committee:
The committee met with most district committees to review the purpose
of the project and hold open discussions regarding their
district’s layout, challenges and participation.
- Meetings with Professional Staff:
The committee met with the professional staff on multiple occasions to
discuss their needs and challenges.
We
also studied the current organization with consideration of: attendance
at district and council activities; geography - Are driving
distance/boundaries affecting district participation? school district
boundaries; growth potential and density; as well as history.
The
report of the committee along with the 4 proposals which were developed
can be found at www.buckeyescouts.org. The committee is currently
recommending the Red Proposal to the Council Executive Board for approval
on April 23rd.
You
are encouraged to provide feedback on this proposal, either in person
or on-line. After reviewing the proposal, you are invited to attend a
public presentation where the proposal will be discussed and questions
will be taken.
(Visit
the website for additional presentation dates) There is an opportunity to
provide feedback directly on the website. Your feedback will be
recorded, consolidated and presented to the Council Executive Board for
their consideration.

Current
Western Ohio
Councils
and Districts |
Update: Bill Wahoff,
former Buckeye District Committee Chair and current Council Chair of
District Operations has posted an article
on the District Google Group (login is sometimes required) discussing some of the
considerations that contributed to the Boundary Committee's
recommendations. Part of Bill's article is excerpted below:
The big issue was the fact that
the Marysville district, North Star, is far too small to support a
professional and needed to be joined with other territories to support
a needed professional.
North
Star had been with Delaware in the past, but it did not seem as though
there was natural growth between Delaware and Marysville. Instead, it
is quite evident that Dublin is growing toward Marysville and vice
versa. Moreover, the Plain City area is growing
significantly. It appears that Northern Madison County will see
significant growth. That "Tri-County" Area could make a wonderful
Scouting District unit in the future. I am very confident
that, no matter what the ending configuration, Scouters will step up
and help and make things work for our Youth. |

Cache In
Trash Out is an ongoing
environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching
community.
Since 2002, geocachers have been dedicated to cleaning up parks and
other cache-friendly places around the world. Through these volunteer
efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!
According to the geocaching.com website,
7th annual Cache In/Trash Out events are scheduled for May 2nd, 3rd.
There are additional events scheduled to coincide with Earth
Day, April 22.
Cache In
Trash Out doesn't just happen
once a year. It can easily happen on every geocache adventure. Bring a
trash bag along with you on your walks in the woods and pick up the
occasional piece of trash you see on the trail. Even this small act can
make a huge difference.
According to the geocaching website:
| Annually, we celebrate
International Cache In Trash Out events where geocachers have an
opportunity to participate in coordinated worldwide clean-up efforts.
Geocachers host clean-up events in their local area on the same day or
weekend as other geocachers around the world. Together, we make an
enormous positive impact. Did we mention that we also have a bit of fun
while we are at it? |
According
to the Geocaching.com website, there are upward of 50
geocaches hidden within 2 miles
of the Worthington Town
square. Geocaching is a great excuse to take a quiet walk
and help clean up our parks and paths. Just remember:
If
you take something from a cache, you need to leave something in its
place and take care not to alarm the muggles.
