From Scoutmaster
Musings scout
blog:
See winter
camping tips for general advice for cold weather camping.
But,
when it's really cold, like 20F below zero, there are more weird things
that happen and stuff for which you might not be prepared:
- Shock cords in
tent poles freeze and lose their stretch
- Lips freeze to
metal spoons and tin cups
- Bananas and
carrots make good hammers
- Moisture escaping
from sleeping bags freezes into an ice shell
- Propane stoves
stop working
- Water bottles
freeze solid and crack open
These are all things
experienced last weekend by our scouts as 7 of
them earned their council Zero Hero awards.

Scouts
camp year round. This weekend, venture crews will be meeting
at Camp Lazarus for the Venturing
Arctic Weekend. Later this month Buckeye District
will be holding its Annual Klondike
(also at Camp Lazarus). Many Worthington Scout Troops will
also be outside working on service projects, winter hikes, and other
outdoor activities.
It is possible to camp and play safely and comfortably in cold weather
without the benefit of a cabin or electronic kill-o-zap games, but
scouts and scouters must pay close attention to weather, equipment,
clothing and each other.
Troop 365's website
has several articles about planning for winter
activities (e.g. planning,
camping,
and survival).
There are lots of other resources online as well, Winter
Camping Tips
can be reviewed in about 10 minutes and is worth the effort.

Zero
Hero Award
It
was -5F at Camp Lazarus this morning. This weekend could be
one of those rare Ohio opportunities to qualify for the Zero Hero Award.
From the Viking Council website:
|
Scout
troops are encouraged to conduct a year-round outdoor program and, in
Minnesota, that often means cold weather. The Zero Hero Award is not
only intended to recognize Scouts who have camped out in Zero degree
weather but to, more importantly, encourage troops to provide cold
weather training to their Scouts in preparation for cold weather
activities.
The
two requirements to earn the Zero Hero award are;
1.
Attend a cold weather camping training session.
2.
Sleep outdoors for a night when the temperature reaches
zero degrees fahrenheit or
colder.
It
is important for Scouts to be prepared for cold weather camping. The
objective should not be to "survive" camping in cold weather but to
have the knowledge and skills to enjoy camping in all types of weather
conditions.
|
See
the Viking Council website
for additional information and availability of patches . . . . . and remember to pack extra socks
and a hat!

The
Unknown Scout
From
Wikipedia:
The Unknown Scout was an anonymous member of the
The Boy Scout Association in the United Kingdom whose good turn
inspired William D. Boyce to form the Boy Scouts of
America.
Boyce
was lost on a
foggy street in London in 1909 when an unknown Scout came to his aid,
guiding him to his destination. The boy then refused Boyce's tip,
explaining that he was a Boy Scout and was merely doing his daily good
turn. Soon thereafter, Boyce met with General
Baden-Powell,
who was Chief Scout at the time. Boyce returned to America, and, four
months later, founded the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910.
In
1926, the second presentation of the Silver Buffalo Award was to the Unknown Scout. That
award resides in the museum at Gilwell Park.
In
addition to the award, a statue of a buffalo was presented with a
plaque, inscribed:
"To
the Unknown Scout Whose Faithfulness
in the Performance of the
Daily Good turn
Brought the Scout Movement to the United States of
America."
On February 8th,
celebrate the 99th anniversary of Boy Scouting in America and honor the
Unknown Scout by doing a good turn. Who knows what you might
start.

Buckeye
District Announcement!
Jamboree
Edition
Council-wide,
it's time to start registering. The Simon
Kenton Council Jamboree Contingent Committee is pleased to announce
that plans
are underway for our participation in the Boy Scout Centennial
Jamboree. The
committee will be meeting monthly to forma plan, in the meantime, now
is the
time for those who are serious about attending, or are just thinking
about it.
Here's why..............
- The Simon Kenton Council
has FIVE troops, to be situated throughout
council.
- Each troop has 36 youth
and four adult leaders, one of whom is between
18 and
21.
- Registration is online*
and kept in chronological order.
Once a troop
from a
specific area has reached 36 youth, all others will be on a
council-wide wait
list. If you want in a certain troop from a certain area and do not
make that
first 36, you may end up in a troop from another area. This is
important - if
you are serious about going, REGISTER NOW! It will cost $10.00 and
$100.00 for
the registration process for everyone. Please pay attention to these
requirements:
YOUTH
may register online,
there is currently no other way to do so.
Youth participants are registered first come-first served, assuming
they pass
the mandatory requirements posted on the national web site. Go to www.myscouting.org
to set
up an account.
You have to create a new account. Once registered, the prompts take you
to a
page where you choose "Event Registration." Choose 2010 National
Scout Jamboree Youth Participant
You'll need your BSA member ID.
ADULT
STAFF (SUBCAMP AND NATIONAL)may
register online, there is currently no other way to do so. To be
approved by
the Council Jamboree Committee, the prospective adult must also have
specific
references. Your background in scouting will also be a factor; have you
participated in council activities? Are you Wood Badge trained (either
course.)
Did you participate in FOS? Has your unit sold popcorn? Have you and
your unit
attended SKC Summer camps? Can you pass the rigorous physical
requirements?
(You have until May of 2010 to improve yourself!) Adults are expected
to be
"role models of physical fitness."
ADULT
LEADERSHIP FOR THE CONTINGENT TROOPS -
DO NOT register
online.
A council application will be made available through your District
Executive
and on the SKC web site in the very near future. All applicants will be
screened by the Council Jamboree Contingent Committee. To be approved
by the
Council Jamboree Committee, the prospective adult must also have
specific
references. Your background in scouting will also be a factor; have you
participated in council activities? Are you Wood Badge trained (either
course.)
Did you participate in FOS? Is your home unit a good example of a
boy-lead
troop? Has your unit sold popcorn? Have you and your unit attended SKC
Summer
camps? Can you pass the rigorous physical requirements? (You have until
May of
2010 to improve yourself!) Adults are expected to be "role models of
physical
fitness."

Scouts' Day,
Founders' Day, Scout
Sunday
From
Wikipedia:
Scouts'
Day is a generic term for
special days observed by members of the World
Organization of the Scout Movement
throughout the year. Some of these days have religious significance,
while others may be a simple celebration of Scouting.
Typically, it is
a day when all members of Scouting will re-affirm the Scout Promise.
Worldwide
in nearly all Scout
associations, Founders' Day is celebrated on 22 February, the
anniversary of Robert
Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell (born in 1857), the
founder of Scouting, and coincidentally also
of his wife Olave Baden-Powell
(born in 1889).
In
1909, Chicago publisher W. D. Boyce was visiting
London, England where he learned of the Scouting movement. Soon after
his return to the US, Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on
February 8, 1910. The Boy Scouts of America
have designated the Sunday preceding February 8 as Scout Sunday and
the following Saturday is designated as Scout Sabbath.
The
day is meant to mark the founding of the Scouts in the United
States. Observation varies by unit and locale. Scouts go to their
places of worship in uniform and help with the service
