Getting your hiking boots resoled

Most scouts seem to grow a shoe size every time they visit the refrigerator.  They never have a pair of hiking boots long enough to wear them out.  On the other hand, most scouters don't grow the same way that scouts do (we'll leave it at that) and can keep the same set of boots for a long time.

If the tread on your boots is getting bald, you might consider having them resoled.  Rocky Mountain Resole has equipment to resole most major brands of hiking shoes.   The cost to resole a 10 year old pair of Raichle boots (pictured below) was about $65, minor repairs to the upper were an additional $35.

Va Va Va Voom's "Mission"

Geocaching is a treasure hunt using the internet and a GPS receiver instead of a map.  Enthusiasts will hide caches of interesting things and publish their GPS coordinates on a website http://geocaching.com.  Other geocachers will look up the location of caches near where they live or travel and go vist them.

A travelbug is an object you leave in a geocache.  It's attached to a metal dog tag with a serial number that allows you to track its movement as geocachers move it from one cache to another.  Travelbugs typically have a name, description, and mission which help geocachers decide where to leave them next . . . sometimes.

Last month, Venturers at the Silver V weekend had a brief introduction to geocaching that included setting up and releasing several travelbugs.  You can read about these bugs and their missions by clicking on the scout patches (left and right) to visit their webpages on geocaching.com.  They will also be followed in the Geocaching Report  near the top of the left column of this page.

For more information about geocaching and travelbugs, visit geocaching.com, check out the geocaching and travelbug pages on this website, or check out the article on geocaching in the May-June issue of Scouting magazine.

SuperBug Completes a Tour of the United States

I'm in a race to visit four states. One state must be on the east coast and one state must be a west cost state. My final destination is Columbus, OH. Please help me on my way! This is a scouting project and my son who is 9 years old will be following it's progress! Thanks!
SuperBug's Mission

A little over a year ago, Mark Toeniskoetter of Pack 365 (currently Troop 243) released a travelbug as part of geocaching activity sponsored by Buckeye District.  The object was to see whose travelbug could visit a state on the west coast, one on the east coast and return first to Columbus.  This past weekend, Mark's entry -- SuperBug -- returned to Columbus after traveling over 4600 miles.  You can trace SuperBug's travels using Google Maps.

Model 500 Buck Knife
Eagle Scout Knife

This was passed along by Tom Ross of Delaware District.  Apparently the Chairman of the company that makes Buck knives is a strong supporter of scouting.   See the following comment from http://www.yaworski.com/eagleknife/:

A casual comment that I am a Scouter during a conversation with Mr. Chuck Buck, Chairman of Buck Knives, led to the revelation that not only does Mr. Buck think that Scouting is a very worthwhile program but that Buck Knives offers a commemorative knife for Eagle Scouts.

The knife that Buck offers for Eagles Scouts is a special variation of the Buck Model 500. The Model 500 is a lockback folding pocket knife with a 3 1/8” drop-point blade, wooden scales and nickel bolsters.

Experts Now Recommend Hands-Only CPR

Scouts are taught to give first aid beginning in the Cub Scout ranks and are first introduced to CPR while earning their Webelos Readyman Badge, a requirement for the Arrow of Light.  Yesterday the American Heart Association recommended changes in CPR practices that make CPR simpler to apply:

NEW YORK (AP) — You can skip the mouth-to-mouth breathing and just press on the chest to save a life. In a major change, the American Heart Association said Monday that hands-only CPR — rapid, deep presses on the victim's chest until help arrives — works just as well as standard CPR for sudden cardiac arrest in adults.

Experts hope bystanders will now be more willing to jump in and help if they see someone suddenly collapse. Hands-only CPR is simpler and easier to remember and removes a big barrier for people skittish about the mouth-to-mouth breathing.

"You only have to do two things. Call 911 and push hard and fast on the middle of the person's chest," said Dr. Michael Sayre, an emergency medicine professor at Ohio State University who headed the committee that made the recommendation.

Read the full  Associated Press article.  There are still situations where mouth to mouth CPR is preferred, e.g. in the case of a near drowning, but "Something is always better than nothing."  BSA and First Aid training materials may not reflect the new guidelines immediately, but  this might be a good discussion topic for your next first aid training.  For more information, see http://handsonlycpr.eisenberginc.com/

They're not just words anymore.  They're a way of life
Believe it.  Live it.

ScoutTube is a video project sponsored by the Capital Area Council, produced by a team of Scouts. The project created 12 video shorts, each one exploring one of the points of the Scout Law. From the ScoutTube website:
From the beaches of Normandy to the streets of Falluja, in a downtown alleyway and a Hill Country treehouse . . . you will join nine Boy Scouts out to discover what it means to BELIEVE and to LIVE the Scout Law.  Meet everyday people  who personify the timeless values of Scouting.  From those who face adversity, do good deeds, or just go to work, the power of Scouting is put into practice  by those who BELIEVE IT and LIVE IT.

Help us celebrate successful children and families!

On June 29, from 4-8 p.m., our 97th Anniversary Celebration will be a fun-filled family event open to all members of the Central Ohio community. It will also be a “homecoming celebration” for celebrating adoptions, times of successful transition and new outlooks on life due to caring support. With leadership and support, dreams lead to success. Thousands of children have been adopted, received counseling and found a safe and loving transitional home, but we know that this success has only come through important partnerships. This celebration will recognize and celebrate this support

This event needs volunteers to help make this a successful day for children, foster parents, teens, and sponsors. The Boy Scouts have helped in the past, and the organizers would love to have the scouts help again.  Volunteers will set up, tear down, man food and game booths, and host entertainers. This would be a  great  service project for your troop.   For more information, see the printable flier at left or contact Gayle Huckeby. balloons

Scouting for Adventure Presented by Boys' Life

TEMECULA, Calif., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Outdoor Channel, America's Leader in Outdoor TV, will partner with Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and Boys' Life Magazine to develop the network's original youth-oriented series, Scouting for Adventure Presented by Boys' Life. The six adventure-filled original episodes capture Scouts in action as they explore the wilderness and educate viewers on outdoor skills and BSA's core values of education, safety and team building.

 Outdoor Channel
Website

"Outdoor Channel offers BSA the ideal platform to introduce millions of homes to the exciting world of Scouting, and I'm confident that we will successfully engage parents and youth alike," said Robert J. Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of BSA. "By bringing our Boys' Life to life, we aim to share the spirit of adventure that is the foundation of Scouting programs and encourage viewers to get out and experience the great outdoors."

Filmed at the National High Adventure Bases of Philmont Scout Ranch and The Florida Sea Base plus Scout camps across the country, cameras will follow Scouts as they take on intense outdoor obstacles and challenges, like coral reef sailing or mountain trekking. Each episode will also include safety tips and "how to" elements that complement the outdoor activity.

"Everyone on our production team was a Scout at one time. We all remember that thrill of adventure as a young boy discovering the great outdoors," said Lloyd Bryan Adams, executive producer at Outdoor Channel. "We hope the series will inspire viewers to get outdoors and explore, but I'm most proud that the shows will incorporate many of BSA's core values that transform young Scouts into grounded, hardworking men."

The series also incorporates "Eagle Scout Features", where celebrities and successful businessmen explain how the lessons learned in Scouting contributed to their careers and impacted their lives. Scouting for Adventure Presented by Boys' Life joins Outdoor Channel's unique programming lineup in Q3 of 2008.

About Outdoor Channel

Outdoor Channel is America's Leader in Outdoor TV, offering programming that captures the excitement of hunting, fishing, shooting, off-road motorsports, adventure and the Western lifestyle. Cub Scout Leaders,

Please mark your calendars now. The council kickoff for the new fall roundup will be Monday June 2, 2008 at Nationwide Arena. Gathering will be at 6:30 and the program starts at 7:00 PM.

We have a new marketing campaign, cobranded with the Columbus Blue Jackets (this will be new materials that replace the 'Race into Cub Scouting' campaign). I don't even have all the details but there are some great premiums, oppoutunities to access the Chiller skating rinks, Blue Jackets tickets and more.

Additionally, to show appreciation to our pack roundup coordinators that attend this kickoff, there will be drawings for prizes. One prize for sure will be a $50 gift card.

Watch your mailbox for a postcard, or email me (rlime@columbus.rr.com) to let me know you can attend.

Sorry, must be present to win. Please, limit 2 leaders per pack at the kickoff.

Oyo High Adventures

Delivering the Promise of Scouting is one of the challenges that face many Troops, Teams and Crews. Teenagers have a real need to seek the thrill of living on the edge and a desire to push the envelope of their own limits.  Oyo High Adventures have been developed to add fun, adventure, and personal growth, and to help put more outing into Scouting.  The Oyo High Adventure Program was created in 2006 to further service the Scouting community by providing an alternate activity for older Scouts and more experienced troops.

Oyo High Adventures offers a variety of Expeditions with the following program elements. Not all programs are offered on each Expedition, so choose the Expedition that best meets your interests.

Buckeye District Daycamp 2008
Tuesday - Friday, July  8-11, 2008

Planning for Buckeye District Daycamp has been underway for the past three months.  Daycamp will use the Grace Brethren Church athletic field as we've done the past two years, but this years daycamp will be a weekday as opposed to a weekend camp and will feature roadtrips to Camp Lazarus for nature activities and shooting sports.   The BB-Guns will be back at Daycamp!

Ted Shigley, the camp director, would like each pack to name a daycamp liason to help with communication, promotion, and registration of dens.  There will be a daycamp meeting at 7:00 pm Tuesday, April 22 to distribute promotional materials for your packs and go over basic information about the camp program and registration.    A detailed agenda along with meeting location and directions are in the Daycamp Coordinator letter, linked below.

Cubmasters,

On Saturday May 31st from Noon to 5 PM at the
Mill Run Amphitheater, we will be holding a recruiting open house for potential new Boy Scouts. We are also inviting all current 4th grade Webelos to visit also. This will give them a great introduction to the Webelos-to-Scouts process and get them excited about becoming a Boy Scout. Each Webelos Scout that attends will be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift card.
Scoutmasters,

Plans are complete for the Boy Scout open house at the Mill Run Amphitheater on May 31st from Noon to 5 PM. To encourage Boy Scouts to invite their friends (remember it's a requirement for first class!) tocheck out scouts, the membership committee will hold drawings for one of two $25 gift cards. Salamander's secret lives reveal ravine conditions

It's the first day of spring, the sun is shining, birds are singing, love is in the air, and young minds turn to . . . salamanders.  The fall issue of Ravinia, published by Friends of the Ravines tells all about the salamanders in Worthington and Columbus area parks.

The best conditions to bring salamanders to the surface of the soil occur after a relatively warm rain in early spring.  With this in mind, I set out on March 31.  The finally mild temperatures and recent rain were perfect conditions for finding salamanders  best known for an ability to remain hidden.

The article discusses salamander species commonly found in Worthington area ravines and how salamanders are an indicator species :  if no salamanders inhabit an area, the soil might contain pollutants or harmful contaminants.

St. George
St. George

Cover of scouting for boys
ST. GEORGE

They (the knights of the Round Table) had as their patron saint St. George, because he was the only one of all the saints who was a horseman. He is the Patron Saint of cavalry from which the word Chivalry is derived, and the special saint of England.  He is also the Patron Saint of Boy Scouts everywhere. Therefore, all Scouts should know his story.

St. George was born in Cappadocia in the year AD 303. He enlisted as a cavalry soldier when he was seventeen, and soon became renowned for his bravery. On one occasion he came to a city named Selem, near which lived a dragon who had to be fed daily with one of the citizens, drawn by lot.

The day St. George came there, the lot had fallen upon the king's daughter, Cleolinda. St. George resolved that she should not die, and so he went out and attacked the dragon, who lived in a swamp close by, and killed him.

When he was faced by a difficulty or danger, however great it appeared—even in the shape of a dragon—he did not avoid it or fear it, but went at it with all the power he could put into himself and his horse. Although inadequately armed for such an encounter, having merely a spear, he charged in, did his best, and finally succeeded in overcoming a difficulty which nobody had dared to tackle.  That is exactly the way in which a Scout should face a difficulty or danger, no matter how great or terrifying it may appear to him or how ill-equipped he may be for the struggle.

He should go at it boldly and confidently, using every power that he can to try to overcome it, and the probability is that he will succeed.

St. George's Day is April 23rd, and on that day all Scouts remind themselves of their Promise and of the Scout Law. Not that a Scout ever forgets either, but on St. George's Day he makes a special point of thinking about them. Remember this when April 23rd comes round again.

Update April 26, 2008:
I wanted to get some information out to all of you. I am in charge of the Cub Scout Camporee this year for the Catholic Committee on Scouting. The Cub Scout Camporee is open to all Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and their families. You don't have to be Catholic to attend the Camporee, but Catholic themes will be presented as part of the activities.

It will be held on May 17th at the Saints Peter and Paul Retreat Center in Heath Ohio - see the flyer for specific details on Who, What, When, Where, and Why.

The theme for the Camporee is the Universal Church.

Six stations will be set-up for activities and will include: Fishing, Woodworking projects, Nature, Catholic Crafts, Map and Compass Belt Loop, and Religious Emblems. Each station will have a 10-15 minute religious presentation (focusing on different aspects of the Universal Church), 5-10 minutes for a game, and 20 minutes for the activities mentioned previously.

Please pass this on to your Dens and promote it within your units for me.

Yours in Scouting,

Steve Smith
Cub Scout Camporee Co-Chairman

Jamboree On The Trail
Saturday, May 10, 2008
Scouts Walking Together World Wide

Jamboree On The Trail is an annual day for the World Scout Movement to hike together. All Scouts, whatever their age and wherever they may be in the world, are invited to participate in whatever way they can. Cubs and younger Scouting sections could visit a local nature trail as part of a weekend camp. A Scout Troop might check out a hiking trail while working on badge requirements. A Rover Crew might make a Service Project out of restoring or maintaining a hiking trail. In their own way, everyone will be hiking the same direction: towards a better future through Scouting. JOTT is held on the second Saturday of May each year.

If you would like to particpate in JOTT, you can actually register your activity and receive patches for your den, pack, patrol, crew or troop.  See the JOTT website for additional information and details.  Registrations must be received by March 31 to receive patches by May 10.

Adults can have fun at camp too!

Greetings,

Summer Camps begin in only a few months, and planning and preparations are well away. At this time we are looking for quality individuals to serve on our camp staffs and in key camp leadership positions for all of our camps. We need adults to serve as Camp Directors, Program Directors, Aquatics Directors, Shooting Sports Directors, along with many other positions! We are also looking for volunteers, preferably Commissioners, to serve a week or more as Volunteer Camp Commissioners.

Please take a moment to reflect on those in your life who might be well-suited for role in summer camp – teachers, professors, college students, retirees, etc. Please encourage them to consider service in a Simon Kenton Council camp this summer. Interested individuals may contact me directly or should submit a Camp Staff Application or Commissioner Application. Additionally, if you have a hot prospect who you would suggest I contact personally, please forward me their contact information.

Thank you for helping us to recruit the best camp staffs in America!
