Okpik
means "Snowy Owl" and is a Boy Scout winter camping program.
There is an excellent resource titled "Okpik: Cold Weather Camping"
available at scout shops which provides lots of great advice on
operating a safe winter excursion. You might also learn a bit from
reading Winter
Camping Tips when planning the training for a campout.
The second session of Delaware District's Okpik training will be held
this weekend at Beaumont Scout Reservation. It looks like the
weekend will feature authentic
"Okpik" weather. Also, at least four Worthington troops will
be
holding their regular monthly campouts. Troop 123 is
traveling to Camp Falling Rock tonight, Troop 243 will be visiting
Hocking Hills for their
Bushwack hike, Troop 332 will hold their Blue Springs
Caving Campout, and Troop 365's camping weekend has a Valley Forge theme.
It may be too late to hit the bookrack at the Scout Store for this
weekend,
but Winter
Camping Tips
can be reviewed in about 10 minutes and is worth the effort.

Bridge
Builder Award
Recognition
of significant service to Scouting
during
the past year
at the Unit or District level.
The Bridge Builder
An
old
man, going a
lone highway,
Came, at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The
old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a
fellow pilgrim, near,
"You
are wasting
strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way;
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide-
Why build you a bridge at the eventide?"
The
builder lifted
his old gray head:
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today,
A youth, whose feet must pass this way.
This
chasm, that has
been naught to me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."
These
are the Bridge Builders that Buckeye District recognized in
2008.
If one of these leaders serves your pack or troop, please thank them
for their efforts.

Events and Calendars
Over the past week, Worthington
Scouts
has surveyed the Buckeye District, Simon Kenton Council, and Venturing
calendars for events of potential interest to Worthington area scouts
and scouters. You can see the results in the left hand column
of the website's front page. If the front page loads slowly,
it's
because Worthington and Buckeye District enjoy an incredibly rich and
diverse variety of activities that scout leaders can use to supplement
their pack or troop programs. One of the goals of Worthington Scouts
is to look for interesting and/or useful
ways to present information about scouting in and around Worthington.
As
part of this effort, the Buckeye District and Simon Kenton Council
calendars
were reproduced as Google Calendars. The Google Calendar
Gadget left
displays a combined view of these calendars. By following
this link this

add the calendar to your pack or troop website
View the

By subscribing to
Google (you've already done this if you're on the District Google
Group) you can make agenda,
day,

It wouldn't be
Google if you couldn't do searches, for example "shooteree"
will search all public calendars for events mentioning shooteree.
Note -- this only works if you're signed into Google.
The calendars page
has another example of a gadget that displays Google Calendars.
As of Feb. 10, the information on these Google calendars is reasonably consistent
with the official calendars on the Buckeye District and Simon Kenton
Council websites. If you notice information that's incorrect
or out
of date, drop a note to Al
Magnuson or Worthington ADC, Chris Morris,
and it will be corrected.

Silver Buffalo presented
as a monument to the Unknown
Scout
TheUnknown Scout was an anonymous member of the
The Boy Scout Association in the United Kingdom whose good turn
inspired William D. Boyce to form the Boy Scouts of
America.
Boyce
was lost on a
foggy street in London in 1909 when an unknown Scout came to his aid,
guiding him to his destination. The boy then refused Boyce's tip,
explaining that he was a Boy Scout and was merely doing his daily good
turn. Soon thereafter, Boyce met with General
Baden-Powell,
who was Chief Scout at the time. Boyce returned to America, and, four
months later, founded the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910.
In
1926, the second presentation of the Silver Buffalo Award was to the Unknown Scout. That
award resides in the museum at Gilwell Park.
In
addition to the award, a statue of a buffalo was presented with a
plaque, inscribed:
"To
the Unknown Scout Whose Faithfulness in the Performance of the
Daily Good turn
Brought the Scout Movement to the United States of
America."
Next
Friday, honor the Unknown Scout and celebrate the anniversary of
scouting by doing a good turn. Who knows what you might
start.

Blue and Gold Banquets
FOS Presentations
The
Blue and Gold Banquet
is a birthday party for Cub Scouting and usually celebrated by packs in
February, the anniversary month of the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy
Scouts
of America began on February 8, 1910 and Cub Scouting began 20 years
later. The
Blue and Gold Banquet
is probably the most exciting event of the whole year because all
families
can take part.
The Blue and Gold
banquet is often the setting for your pack's annual Friend's of Scouting
presentation. If your pack or troop has not yet scheduled
its 2008 FOS presentation, contact Buckeye District Director, Jan
Berry, or Worthington ADC, Chris Morris,
who will arrange to have a
presenter visit your unit (signup
forms are on the District website).
Scouters can
track total contributions in Worthington through First
Giving (see the widget at left). Look for the First Giving
widget to appear near the FOS patch for most pages on this site.

Units
recruiting Unit Commissioners
Commissioners
are district and council leaders who help Scout units succeed. They
coach and consult with adult leaders of Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout
troops, and Venturing crews. Commissioners help maintain the
standards of
the Boy Scouts of America. They also oversee the unit charter renewal
plan so that
each unit reregisters on time with an optimum number of youth and adult
members.
As
part of a district-wide effort to improve support for Buckeye District
packs, troops, and crews, Worthington ADC, Chris Morris
would like to recruit unit commissioners for two packs and two troops
in Worthington.
If
you've been around the block with scouting and would like to lend your
experience to a pack or troop, contact Chris Morris.
Starting in February,
the Unit Commissioners will meet every other month at 6:15
p.m. just before the district roundtable. At 6:30 these
meetings
open to any unit leaders interested in meeting with their unit
commissioner.

Scouts'
Day is a generic term for
special days observed by members of the World
Organization of the Scout Movement
throughout the year. Some of these days have religious significance,
while others may be a simple celebration of Scouting.
Typically, it is
a day when all members of Scouting will re-affirm the Scout Promise.
Worldwide
in nearly all Scout
associations, Founders' Day is celebrated on 22 February, the
anniversary of Robert
Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell (born in 1857), the
founder of Scouting, and coincidentally also
of his wife Olave Baden-Powell
(born in 1889).
In
1909, Chicago publisher W. D. Boyce was visiting
London, England where he learned of the Scouting movement. Soon after
his return to the US, Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on
February 8, 1910. The Boy Scouts of America
have designated the Sunday preceding February 8 as Scout Sunday and
the following Saturday is designated as Scout Sabbath.
The
day is meant to mark the founding of the Scouts in the United
States. Observation varies by unit and locale. Scouts go to their
places of worship in uniform and help with the service.

Looking
for Good Schtick Volunteers
needed for District Daycamp
Schtick!!??
What's
schtick and how do you tell good schtick from bad schtick? Schtick is Indiana Jones' Stetson, Clint
Eastwood's squint, or Homer Simpson's donut fixation. Schtick is the
personal flair that an actor brings to a role in a movie or play.
The theme for the 2008 Buckeye District Daycamp is Hooray for Hollywood and
directors Ted Shigley and Judy Manley are looking for scouters who can
bring some good schtick to camp.
District Daycamp is scheduled for the week of July 7-11. Ted
Shigley says, "There
are lots of ways to volunteer, by helping with crafts, shooting sports,

Maintenance
Recently
the maintainer of this site was shown how WorthingtonScouts.org looks
in Internet Explorer.
It was pretty awful. A lot of the layout was messed
up.
It's quite likely the site also renders poorly on older
computers
with smaller screens. This problem is being investigated and
will
be corrected if possible. In the meantime, the site will look
much better in Firefox
if
you have it available. . . .
Still working on
this issue, but at least the spelling of maintenance is now correct.
Do
you
know the difference beween an ASM, and ACM, and an ASE? It
could be socially relevant. Many scouters and scout
professionals use
specialized terms that are completely unfamiliar to new leaders and
parents.
Worse, they often use abbreviations so that terms like District Director, Order of the
Arrow, and Business
Manager are replaced with DD, OA and . . .
well, you
get the idea.
To help new leaders properly interpret scoutspeak, BSA
National has compiled a lexicon of commonly used scout terminology and
abbreviations on the scouting.org
website. So if you're not sure about the
difference between NYLT, NYILT, and NLTC, the abbreviations
page will help you sort it all out.
WorthingtonScouts.org was commissioned to support better communication
in the Worthington area scouting community. We originally
considered supporting Language
of Scouting by mapping National's scout lexicon
into a deck of online flashcards, but flashcards have unpleasant
associations. Fortunately the Scouting Abbreviations page has
some good advice, KISMIF (Keep
it simple, Make it Fun), so we used a bingo
card generator (right) to create a
scouting variant of Buzzword Bingo.
Print oungo card and take it to your next scout
meeting. It will help you pay attention and learn to talk
like a scouter!
Scouting Buzzword Bingo
Before
your next scout meeting, follow the
link to generate bingo cards for yourself and your friends.
Whenever you or someone else in your meeting uses an
abbreviation on your card, mark its box. The first card with
5 boxes in a row wins!
In no time you'll be
speaking
like a CSE.

THANK
YOU, POPCORN KERNELS!
Buckeye District Popcorn Kernel,
Terry Smith, sent out the final(?) popcorn bulletin for the 2007 sale
on Wednesday. This email is reposted in full on the popcorn page.
In addition to information about hockey tickets, left over
stock and recruiting, there's important information about an
appreciation dinner that will be held on Jan. 29 which is excerpted
below:
Buckeye District led the pack in Simon Kenton Council with $701,862 in
popcorn retail, up more than 10% from last year, the highest percentage
increase of all the Districts! Without a doubt, it is testament to your
hard work that led to these extraordinary results. We had 80 units
participating - also a record. Overall, Simon Kenton Council was also
up, coming in at 2.4 million dollars! This is so important to
supporting the Council camps and programming.
As a thank you for these efforts, Council is throwing a dinner for the
Popcorn Kernels (up to 2 attendees per unit) which may include the Unit
leader / Popcorn Kernel - whoever was actively involved in the popcorn
program.
Notes are as follows:

Merit Badge Information
In
addition to the District Merit Badge Day, there are additional merit
badge opportunities for area scouts.
Merit

There
are at least two other merit badge events within a 1-2 hour drive of

There
are local organizations, e.g. COSI, AEP, Columbus Zoo that offer merit

On
this seemingly innocent evening, scouts of Troops 268 and 243 travelled
to Camp Lazarus, where they set up for the night in two cabins.
The
next morning,
electronic equipment was set up in a third building, and the mayhem
began. Under the influence of these so-called electronic
'toys', the scouts
left a trail of destruction. Wrecked cars. Dead bodies. Severely
injured sports players. Smashed guitars. Flamed pokémons.
Exploded
tanks, aircraft and ships. Bowling alleys, football fields and
basketball courts laid waste. Nothing was safe from their virtual
rampage. The adult leaders were powerless to stop this. All
through the day, more electronic engines of mass destruction were
deployed.
Meanwhile,
the troop
adult leaders had managed to set up a laptop to
receive broadcast HD TV signals, and project them onto a sheet hung on
the wall. It only took two trips to the store to get the right
equipment!

Greetings,
Fellow, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub
Scouts, Venture Crews, Explorers, Varsity, Leaders,
Parents, Siblings, and students.
We
are seeking musicians and voices for the Scouting
Orchestra and Choir. We will be holding open group
auditions for both
the Scouting orchestra and choir at 6:30-8:30 pm on
January 22, and
23rd. Auditions will be held at St. John Chrysostom's
church hall
located at 5858

Cleveland). The
audition pieces are, "
The Battle Hymn of the Republic
& The Star
Spangled Banner." We need to find out how many of you
are interested
in joining with us. The Orchestra and Choir will
perform in various
Festivals, 4th of July's, Worthington on the green,
Ohio Village/
Museum, Christmas shows, and our own Scouting Revue, " 100 years of
Broadway," which we hope to make an annual event. We
invite you to
come and join us if you love to sing or play an
instrument. Our
rehearsal schedule is being put together and details
are dependent on
how large a group we are. The Schedule will change
according to our
needs and more rehearsals will be added as needed.
Please feel free to
contact us (Mic O'Halloran reddeus2000@yahoo.com 614-848-3988 - Chris
Morris 614-370-1207) for more information. For the
group auditions,
choir or orchestra, you will sing and play and we will
figure out
where you are musically. There are no solo auditions,
just play or
sing as a group. There are some outside performances
being scheduled
at this moment and we will let you know when and where
they are.
Venturing Winter Klondike Jan. 18-20, 2008 Camp Falling Rock
Fellowship,
FUN, snow (??), good food, a warm fire – these
are a few of the things you can expect at this
year's Venturing
Winter Klondike. This is primarily a
fellowship weekend for all Venturers -- activities will
include winter hikes,
winter sports, first aid and CPR, climbing and rappelling, shooting
sports
(weather permitting), sledding (weather permitting), and survival
techniques
(part of the Ranger program). Hands-on
sessions about Leave No Trace, with emphasis on winter camping, will be
provided. Movies will be shown in the
evenings. There will be a variety of
competitions for your crew members to participate in (or put together a
new
crew after you arrive on Friday night).
The Klondike
Derby is an annual event held by Buckeye District during
January. BSA units have been running Klondike derbies
nationally since 1949. The event is based on the heritage of
the Klondike Gold rush and consists of a series of stations where units
test their scoutcraft skills and leadership -- earning points towards a
total score.
This year's Klondike sledgers will be taking a Caribbean Island cruise
around Camp Lazarus. The event staff recommends that sledges
be modified for proper floatation and to protect equipment from both
water and snow. Refer to the printable flier (below left) for
registration information, event rules and and equipment list (don't forget the sunblock and
beach towels!).

continue their involvement with scouting through service.
The brothers of Epsilon
Tau Pi wish to help all scouts reach
the rank of
Eagle. To further this goal, Epsilon
Tau Pi
holds an annual event called Merit Badge College, a 3 session
event
during which a scout can earn up to 3 merit badges. There are
a
variety of merit badges offered, including Eagle required
and non-required badges. Sessions are held in
February,
March, and April. Registration begins Nov. 29 and ends
January
20, 2008.
The Readyman Event is set up as a
7 station rotation. The Scouts will be divided into seven

Den
Chief Training
Seventeen
scouts completed Den Chief Training at Buckeye District's Den Chief
Training held on Dec. 2. A Den Chief is a scout, usually age
13 or over, who works with a Cub Scout Pack or Den. Den Chief
is a formal troop position. Den Chiefs are jointly appointed
by the Pack's Cubmaster and the Scout's Scoutmaster. Service
as Den Chief counts toward rank advancement.
If you or a scout you know is interested in being a Den Chief but was
unable to attend the training on Dec. 2, Delaware
District is holding a training on January 13. The
registration deadline is January 10. For more information,
see the
event flier reposted on the Troop
243 website.

Follow the Blue Blazes
The Buckeye Trail provides the
setting for this spring's
Buckeye District Camporee --
April 18, 19, and 20 (the date changed):
Unique
among hiking trails is the one that forms a complete loop around the
state of Ohio. That 1200 mile trail is called the Buckeye
Trail. Showing the way on tree trunks, rocks, and other
natural signposts are the blue painted makings called "the blue
blazes." In Follow the
Blue Blazes,
the reader embarks on a journey to discover a part of Ohio largely
unseen except along this great path. -- excerpted from Follow the Blue Blazes

In
related news, Scientists say they now know why some popcorn kernels
resist popping into puffy white globes.
It's long been known that popcorn kernels must have a precise moisture
level in their starchy center - about 15 percent - to explode. But
Purdue University researchers found the key to a kernel's explosive
success
lies in the composition of its hull.
Unpopped kernels, it turns out, have leaky hulls that prevent the
moisture pressure buildup needed for them to pop and lack the optimal
hull structure that allows most kernels to explode.
