Overview
The
2008 Webelos Readyman event is scheduled for Saturday, Jan 12.
The Boy Scout motto is BE PREPARED.
Should someone ask,
"Prepared for what?" - "Prepared for anything is the answer.
Readyman Activity Badge prepares the Scout for First Aid
hurry cases, teaches how to get help when needed, and teaches safety.
Objectives
- To teach WEBELOS
Scouts simple first aid and emergency first aid for the "hurry cases"
- To make WEBELOS
Scouts more aware of safety around the home, bicycle safety, and car
safety.
You
never know when you will be
called upon to help someone in an emergency -- at the store, while
hikeing, babysitting, or elsewhere. The Readyman activity
badge is desined to help the Webelos get ready for these emergencies.
Youth and children are not too young to help others!
To earn the
Readyman activity badge a Webelos Scout must learn first
aid, safe swim rules, and how to drive his bicycle without danger to
himself or others. He also learns how to make his home safer
and the safety rules for passengers in the car.
In earning
the Readyman activity badge, he will get a faster start on
being prepared as a Scout. Many of the things he learns help him
advance as a boy scout.
For more information, download the printable
flier for this event.

Checkin/Registration
There have been some minor changes to Checkin, reflecting suggestions
received in the past couple weeks.
The
scouts are
organized by pack/den. When you arrive, there will be a table
in
the lobby with a packet for each pack/den. The checkin packet:
- will
have your leader's name(s)
- lists
the order that your group rotates through the stations
- has
a map of Worthington Christian High School
- contains
the application you sent to Council
- contains
patches and other program material
There
will also be a bin with first aid kits -- take enough for your scouts
and any adult who forgot their neckerchief slide.
Scouts and adults
will have name cards with
- Their name, pack, den, group
leader (the adult who signed the application).
- Your patrol -- Bear, Beaver,
Bobwhite, Buffalo, Eagle, Fox, Owl
- A rally point -- this
will be an area in the gym where you should meet with your group
leader. There will be a map with an area marked for each patrol
(see images left).
Once
you have your card, procede to your rally point and join your group.
Don't linger around the registration area -- it's much
smaller than the gym.
One of the scenarios in the Safety
Plan breakout will be "How to Keep a group of Scouts
organized in a Crowd". Your ideas about this
subject will be highly appreciated.
ERROR
CORRECTION
The registration forms should have been
checked and rechecked by the opening of the event on Saturday morning.
Still, there is a possiblity that your den's registration
form has been lost, misplaced, sent to the Merit Badge lady,
eaten by household pets or toddlers, etc. If this happens,
please be
patient. We'll get you into the event. There are
over 160 scouts registered. Checkin will not be a thing of
beauty.

Gathering
Activity
While your group is waiting for the opening ceremony, there
will be a gathering activity in the gymnasium led by Ted Shigley --
basically a series of relays with simple first aid skills.
- Make
a sling from a piece of cloth, such as a pillowcase
- Demonstrate
making an emergency stretcher with hiking staves and a blanket
- splint
relay, with newspaper and triangle bandages.

Questions,
Questions
Some of the material on this page was taken over from last years'
event. Some of it has been pulled in from various web
resources.
These sources were not always consistent. As you
read
these
notes, if you notice something that doesn't make sense, it's probably
because it doesn't make sense. Please let me know about these
things. You'll enjoy watching me squirm and will help lay the
foundation for next year's event. -- AWM
1. The
flier mentioned that "all but one of the requirements" will be
satisfied at the event. What's missing?
- It
would help if the
scouts review Readyman Requirement 1, Courage Character Connection
with their parents, guardians, or den leader.
With your parent, guardian, or
Webelos den leader, complete the Courage
Character Connection:
a.
KNOW: Define the importance of each courage step:
Be strong
| Be strong |
Be calm |
| Be clear |
Be careful |
Explain how memorizing the
courage steps helps you to be ready.
b. COMMIT: Explain why it is hard to follow the
courage steps in an
emergency.
Tell when you can use the courage steps in other situations
(such as standing up to a bully, avoiding fights, behing fair, not
stealing or cheating when tempted, etc.)
c.
PRACTICE: Act out oneof the requirements using
these courage steps:
Be strong; Be calm; Be clear; Be
careful.
|
We
will talk about the Courage Character Connection in the opening and in
the rotations. This is a foundational concept that your
scouts will build upon in Boy Scouts -- the more discussion the better.
- An
Emergency
Phone List
sticker will be included with your event packet.
The scouts will need the information to fill this out either
at or after the event.
2.
My son is has a
basketball, hockey, etc game on Saturday and will only be able to
attend part of the event.
You'll only be able to
participate in some of the stations, decide which ones you want to do,
contact Al
Magnuson, and we will try to accomodate you.
Last year's
event was organized by Mike Biedenharn of Pack 418 and received the
following feedback:
Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2007
To: Marianne Watkins
Subject: Readyman
Marianne,
At our Pack 2999 meeting last week, Robin Eberhardt delivered a quick
note on how her son, Collin, gave the Heimlich Maneuver to his brother,
thus saving his life. Collin learned this maneuver at the Readyman
First Aid training in January. I believe that Melissa Johnson heard
this testimonial also. She was there to deliver the "Friends of
Scouting" presentation.
Anyway, can you please pass this on to the Readyman event staff? Let
them know what impact they have on the boys and our community. Also, if
there is any scouting award that we can give for this courageous
action, please let me know. The Readyman staff should also be a part of
this award.
Thanks!!
Brad Haggis

Logical Steps |

Boys who continue in
scouting will continue to take first aid training at increasing levels
of sophistication as they advance through their ranks. Upon
completion of the Readyman requirements, Webelos can earn the BSA
Emergency Preparedness Award (it's a pin) by building a
family emergency kit and doing one of the following:
- taking a first aid course conducted by your
local Red Cross
- giving a presentation to your den on preparing
for emergencies
- organizing a training program for your Webelos
den on stranger awareness, Internet safety, or safety at home
An information sheet for the
Emergency Preparedness Award is included in the leader packets.
Adults who would like to "keep up" with their scouts should consider
taking either the Blackfoot
or Greenbar
Scoutmaster Fundamentals course. Blackfoot
is held in the spring and Greenbar
is held in the fall. Registration fliers for both courses are
included in the leader packets. Of course they're also
available through the web links.
