District
Committee Meeting
Quality
District and Cream Pies
Buckeye
District is very near to meeting the financial and membership goals
needed to qualify for the BSA Quality District Award. Quality
Unit, Quality District, and Quality Council awards are the
ways that the BSA tries to recognize units that have strong quality
programs. Buckeye District has not qualified for this award
for at least five years.
To receive this year's Quality District Award, Buckeye District must
- Raise
an additional $2000 in FOS contributions to meet its goal of $100,000.
- Recruit
78 new scouts in the month of December.
You
can help by making an FOS
contribution or by inviting a youth to your next pack, troop,
or crew meeting.
What does this have to do with cream pies? District Director
Jan Berry, following the example
of our District Popcorn Kernel, has offered to take a pie in the face
if the District raises that last $2000 of FOS contributions
by next week's roundtable. Such devotion to scouting should
not go unrecognized -- if you can make a contribution, leave Jan a
message at the Council Office, 614-436-7200.

64 Year Old receives Eagle Scout
Award.
Cleveland
Sellers
(Born 1944) is the Director of the African American Studies Program at
the University of South Carolina.
Sellers was born in 1944 in Denmark, South Carolina. During his
boyhood, Sellers joined the Boy Scouts of America and attended the 1960
National Scout jamboree in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Although Sellers
completed the requirments necessary to become an Eagle Scout, "his
paperwork was lost" and he was not formally recognized with the honor
until December of 2007 at 64 years of age, more than four decades after
it was earned.
Mr.
Sellers was interviewed today on National Public Radio.
Listen to the interview online at NPR.org.

Buckeye
District Nearing FOS Goal
Needed for Quality District Award
Buckeye
District needs to raise $100,000 in FOS contributions to qualify for
Quality District this year. As of the November 29 District
Committee Meeting, the District had raised roughly $98,000 dollars with
$2000 to go. The Assistant District Commissioners (that would
be
Chris Morris for Worthington) have appealed to District packs and
troops to pass the hat.
$20 from each unit would put the District over its goal and
help
Buckeye District qualify for Quality Unit for the first time in 8
years.
In the week since the District meeting, units have donated $1100 -- the
gap has been narrowed to just $900!

Worthington Scouts publishes an
RS Feed at http://worthingtonscouts.org/worth_rss.xml
|
RSS Feed for Worthington Scouts
RSS
is a format for delivering web content. An RSS Feed
is an
RSS file exported by a website. It can contain articles from
the website, summaries of articles, or just a table of contents.
Websites that use a site builder like WordPress.com often
have the capability to generate an RSS Feed automatically.
For now WorthingtonScouts' RSS Feed is an RSS
file
that's maintained manually containing titles and summaries of new
articles added to the site.
SO WHAT'S IT GOOD FOR?
According
to http://www.whatisrss.com,
an RSS Feed
can be used to notify you the content of a site has been
updated -- without having to actually visit the site. For
example, the Google Gadget on the left could be added to your Google
home page (click the button at the lower left) or embedded in your
troop website. The table of contents will update whenever a
new article is posted to Worthington Scouts.
One of the long term goals of Worthington Scouts is to develop web
resources that can be reused by other scouting websites. For
example, several of the articles on this page have
buttons which
bring up instructions for including the article on your pack or troop
website. The
site's
current use of RSS is very unsophisticated, but we hope to exploit this
technology more fully in the coming year.

Tiger
Christmas at Camp Lazarus
Saturday, December 15, 10:00
am to 5:00 pm
Tiger Christmas is only a name for the biggest and best event offered
to Cub
Scouts. It will not matter if they are a Tiger Cub or a Web 2...Santa
Claus is coming to Camp Lazarus.
We have over 15 activities for the Cubs from making nails in the
blacksmith shop, building a birdhouse, fishing, BB shooting, Pinewood
Derby racing, making your own rope, tomahawk throwing, black powder
shooting, see who is the best at the challenge trail, cooking
decorating (and eating too), leather working, monkey fist ropework, and
the list just continues on and on. There is something for every Cub who
comes to camp.
Help us to spread the word Tiger Christmas will be the best ever. And
of course a special visit from Santa himself. We heard Mrs Claus is
coming too. Are you?

Scouts Invited to Participate in
Franklin County Fair
Scout
Volunteers needed for preliminary planning
The Boy Scouts in the Franklin County area have been invited to exhibit
their program at the Franklin County Fair. This would allow
scouts to enter projects in the fair and be judged like other groups
such as 4H. A small group of scouts and/or scouters are
needed to
help define the project categories and guidelines. This group
would meet beginning in December. In addition, five
positions on
the Franklin County Junior Fair Board have been opened for Boy Scout
representatives.
Wally House of Gahanna is acting as the Boy Scouts' liason
with
the Fair Board. Additional information is available
in his
letter posted to the Google Group last week.

Popcorn
sales record set
again
great job!!!
Last
year, Buckeye District sold $634,000 during the fall
sale. Our goal
this year was to exceed $700,000 - and we reached $698,000 with
additional orders still
dribbling in - and ANY additional orders received by December
1 WILL
be filled!
We also had a record 76 units (out of about 105 units in Buckeye
District) participating in the popcorn sale! Council had an
overall
increase of about 10 percent - Great job done
by all of
you! This is
so important to the funding of the Scouting program! $490,000
of this sale will support local
Scouting
operations! . . . more |
 |
Military
donations extended
until December 31
Tis
the season for giving! In order to provide a special gift to
our
troops stationed all over the world and to exceed the $700,000 sales
mark, the Military program has been extended. See the popccrn
page for details. |
 |
NEW
INCENTIVES!
If Buckeye District meets certain sales goals, e.g. EVERY traditional
unit having sold at least one Military donation this fall, our popcorn
kernel, Terry Smith, will let one lucky scout thow a pie in his face.
See the popcorn
page for full details, sell that popcorn, and help a scout
earn a YouTube
moment.

an adult member of your family what drugs could do to your body
and how they would affect your ability to think clearly.
